About This Item

E Rutherford, New Jersey, U.S.A: Mentor/Penguin, 1991. Mass Market Paperback. Near Fine-Fine. Type: Book 1991/31st Printing/317 Pages. Classic analysis of America's unique political character, quoted heavily by politicians and perennially popping up on history professors' reading lists. The book's enduring appeal lies in the eloquent, prophetic voice of Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), a French aristocrat who visited the United States in 1831. A thoughtful young man in a still-young country, he succeeds in penning this penetrating study of America's people, culture, history, geography, politics, legal system, and economy. There is a light amount of marginalia and underlining in pen. a page or two has dogeared corners - completely readable condition.

Synopsis

De la démocratie en Amérique (published in two volumes, the first in 1835 and the second in 1840) is a classic French text by Alexis de Tocqueville on the democratic institution of the United States in the 1830s and its strengths and weaknesses. A literal translation of its title is On Democracy in America, but the usual translation of the title is simply Democracy in America.
