Paris: Galerie Beaux-Arts, 1938.. Large octavo. Pictorial stiff wrappers (after a design by Tanguy). Very heavily illustrated with drawings, photographs, facsimiles, etc. Pale green wrappers somewhat tanned at edges, neatly recased, with shallow loss at crown and toe of spine, usual light foxing, otherwise a very good copy in lightly chipped and tanned glassine wrapper. This copy is significantly better than the norm for this book. First edition. A multi-disciplinary exercise in self-explanation, drawing on primary texts for the definition of terms and tendencies, and reproductions of artworks by those who at various times found or placed themselves under the umbrella of Surréalisme. The work was compiled to accompany the Exposition International du Surréalisme, organized by Breton and Eluard, with the assistance of Duchamp, Ernst, Dali and others, and the uncommon [8]pp. catalogue of the exhibition (inevitably a bit tanned) is laid in.

First American edition, presumed first printing. A Studio Book. by Viking Press. Text in English translated from the French. This massive book includes a map of Lautrec's Paris, a catalogue of his graphic works and a chronology of his life and work. Many magnificent full page color reproductions as well as paste-on reproductions and b&w photos. no pages or illustrations, photos, etc. are missing.Book is in excellent condition. Only faults we could find in book are some shelf wear/white spotting at bottom edge of the back cover, a small (about 1/8") stain at top of spine extending about one inch from the spine at the top of the pages; however, the stain is only visible on the top edges of the pages when the book is closed. It does not show on the pages themselves. The Dj is whole but shows its age with some light stains and wear marks on front cover and shelf wear at edges including some small tears and chipping at bottom of spine are.
