An important work, among the earliest post-Cook printings relating to Tahiti, and one of very few early accounts of Spanish activity there in the 1770s. González de Agüeros was head of the Franciscan missionary college of Santa Rosa at Ocapa, in Peru. After his return to Spain, he wrote this history of the Chilean province of Chiloé. It includes a lengthy résumé of the Aguila expedition under Captain Boenechea that came to Tahiti to leave two Franciscan missionaries in 1774, prompted by reports of the recent English voyages in the Pacific. Just two missionary friars were sent and it was ultimately unsuccessful. A later section describes their stay at Santa Cruz de Chatutira in Tautira Bay from January to November 1775. There is also an account of the neighbouring islands and their natural productions.
The relevant section is entitled Noticias práticas, é individuales de las islas nombradas vulgarmente de Otahiti ó Carolinas situadas en el mar del Sur, ó Pacífico. Although O'Reilly and Reitman - citing Fernandez de Navarrete's Biblioteca maritima española and D. Barros Arana's Historia jeneral de Chile - find fault with González de Agüeros's sources, nonetheless it remains a significant and early work. Most of the material to do with the voyages of the Aguila only appears in nineteenth or twentieth-century books, chiefly Corney's "Quest and Occupation of Tahiti".
The book is surprisingly rare on the market with just two copies recorded as having been sold at auction in the last fifty years.

RARE FIRST EDITION OF ONE OF THE MOST FAMOUS SEA TALES IN ALL OF MARITIME LITERATURE.
On their way to introduce the bread-fruit as a cash crop to the West Indies from the South Sea Island, "Bread-fruit Bligh" and eighteen of his crew were set adrift by Fletcher Christian, the master's mate of the "Bounty," and made a journey of about 4000 miles in an open boat before landing on the East Indian island of Timor. Several of the mutineers, who had settled on Pitcairn Island, were eventually captured and three were executed in England. "An extremely important book" (Hill, p. 27). Interestingly enough, Bligh was subjected to two further mutinies in his career, though only the last, in New South Wales, can… Read More

Henisch's great work on the sphere, astronomy and exploration. Includes several mentions of America, Columbus and Vespucci.
Hieronymus Wolf recommended Henisch for the Protestant St. Anna Gymnasium in Augsburg, where he was professor of logic and mathematics from 1576-1617. He also taught in Hebrew, Greek, Latin and rhetoric, held the office of rector together with Simon Fabricius from 1580-93, was head of the city library at the same time and led a medical practice until his death. Four times he was dean of the Augsburg medical college. He collected and organized the files of the Collegium medicum founded in 1582, thus laying the foundation for Augsburg's rich medical history.
He also published the first… Read More
