Adams is important in the history of the progress of science as he strongly advocated experimental science. I have provided a page from his lecture: "On The Method of Reasoning in Natural Philosophy" (p. 98 this volume) describing his commitment to experimental science. I cannot overstate the importance of this shift in scientific thinking - relying on experimental data instead of the wisdom of the ancients.
