1645 Erasmus of Rotterdam On the Writing of Letters Latin Rhetoric Humanism

"When I have a little money, I buy books; and if I have any left, I buy food and clothes."

― Erasmus

Erasmus's 'De Conscribendis Epistolis', or 'On the Writing of Letters', is one of the earliest and best treatises on letter writing. It was a unique work that described the main differences between giving speeches or orations and simply writing a conversational letter. Erasmus was mostly known for his Greek New Testament and works that influenced the Protestant Reformation; however, he wrote other scholarly works that attacked the learned norms of writing such as 'Ciceronianus' and this work on letters.
