New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, 1930. First US Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. [207] pages. Very Good in Fair dust jacket. Bound in red cloth over boards with black endpapers. A touch of fading to spine. Hinges sound. Jacket has two large pieces missing from front panel, several creases and some tears closed with tape repairs from the back.. Lead engravings. Pioneering graphic novel capturing the crisis of capitalism in the early 20th century. The story is the tragic tale of a girl from the lower classes told entirely through pictures. Nückel, an artist working in Munich in the early 20th century, was a contemporary and an inspiration to Lynd Ward. Nückel's preferred medium was the leadcut, and his mastery of this medium is clearly evident in this work. Scarce in any sort of dust jacket.

Description:
New York: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Square octavo [20 cm] Red cloth over boards, with titles and cover illustration in black. Black endpapers. The spine is negligibly sunned, and the cloth at the head of the backstrip is ever so slightly frayed. The front hinge is a bit soft, however the book is still very sturdy. There is a prior owner's name in neat pen in the top fore-edge corner of the title page. No dust jacket. Nückel's classic story, told entirely through a collection of striking images. From the publisher- "This pitiless story of a girl of the lower classes is curt, bare and powerful. The baseness of the underworld milieu is drawn with unsparing line; but the tale is lifted out of the merely lurid by the honesty of the artist's feelings, by his mastery of his medium. It reaches pure tragedy.
