First volume of a two-volume set, well illustrated throughout with color and folding plates depicting early manuscript literature and early printing. Handsomely bound in gray cloth lettered and extensively decorated in gilt, black and dark gray, leather spine lettered and embellished with gilt, all edges tinted red, attached ribbon bookmark, 443 pages. Only light rubbing to the extremities, gilt bright and clear, good hinges, firm text block, preliminary blank appears to have been removed (half-title present), a few folding plates with old tape repairs to the far outer margins, pages clean, no names or other markings.. Hard Cover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
