Glasgow: Jackson Son & Company, 1945. Inscribed and signed by Forster to Monroe Wheeler Octavo. Original wrappers, with the original glassine. Fine. First edition, inscribed by Forster on the half title: "Monroe Wheeler, with E. M. Forster's best wishes. May 1946." Forster has made one correction to the text (page 10); laid in is part of the original stamped envelope hand-addressed by Forster to Wheeler at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Wheeler (1899-1988) became the inaugural Director of Exhibitions at MOMA in 1940; he and his life-long partner, Glenway Westcott, maintained a friendship with Forster in the 1940s and 50s. Westcott published a fond reminescence of a dinner party Wheeler and him held for Forster, his longtime partner Bob Buckingham, Alfred C. Kinsey, and Joseph Campbell. Westcott describes how during a visit to London in the fall of 1952, Wheeler was entrusted by Forster with the manuscript for his novel of homosexual love, "Maurice," and letters granting permission for its publication in America after his death, for delivery to Christopher Isherwood, who saw through its publication according to Forster's wishes (see "A Dinner, a Walk, a Talk with Forster", republished in E.M Forster: Recollections and Interviews, ed. J.H. Stape)
