Jonathan Cape, London., 1935. First edition. Octavo. 223 pages. Jessie Chambers was the model for Miriam in Sons and Lovers and knew Lawrence perhaps more intimately than anyone during his adolescence and early manhood. He would later say to her, ''You were the anvil on which I hammered myself out.''This copy belonged to Louie Burrows who was Lawrence's fiancée from 1910 to 1912 at which date he met Frieda Weekly with whom he would spend the rest of his life. There are numerous marginalia in Burrows' hand, some adding clarity to the text, some questioning it, and others giving pithy insight. Laid in is a small sheet, also with about 130 words in her hand, again giving her view of Lawrence's relationships, including the poignant sentence, ''I made no claim - had no claim - so he had no need to mollify me.'' In The Rainbow, Burrows' family becomes the Brangwens, Cossall, the village where they lived, becomes Cossethay, and Louie Burrows herself is the model for Ursula Brangwen. She makes her notes on the reverse of a sheet of writing paper headed with her Coteshaël address.Edges faintly spotted. Faint evidence of damp to the covers. Very good in good, chipped and rubbed dustwrapper with a long closed tear to the front flap fold.
