Complete with frontispiece portrait and 11 plates. The other etchings are vignettes appearing as chapter headpieces and tailpieces. Contemporary half dark blue morocco by Bumpus of Oxford Street (London), with raised bands and gilt tooling on spine, single gilt rules on covers, and top edge gilt. Penciled ownership inscription of North Carolina collector, Forster A. Sondley, on the front flyleaf. Tasteful bookplate of Sondley Reference Library and gilt manuscript call number on front pastedown. Ink stamp on front free endpaper, verso of title, and in margin of one other page. Embossed stamp on title page and on each of the plates, placed on the border of the printed area, not affecting the subject matter. Else very good plus. Title page in red and black. Preface lightly tones. Otherwise, pages clean and free of marking, soiling, staining or foxing. Bound in later bookbinder's board with paper spine. Covers lightly rubbed and spine a little darkened. A very good copy of this scarce 18th Century treatment of, among others, the Augustinian, Benedictine, Cistercian, Carmelite, Dominican, Franciscan and Jesuit orders, accompanied with a general history and treatment of monasticism.

The covers are worn and the spines brittle with minor loss at the tops and bottoms, and a 1.5-inch piece missing from the bottom of the spine of Vol.1, also a tasteful bookplate in each volume. Original self cover. 7 pages. Text in Swedish. Sweden purchased the West Indies island of St. Barts from France in 1784, in exchange for trade rights in the Swedish port city of Gothenburg. The island was sold back to France in 1878, making it the longest held overseas possession in the Swedens history. St. Barts was also the only overseas possession ever held by Sweden for more than twenty years.
