About This Item
xxvi+495 pages with frontispiece and illustrations. Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First edition. The existence of Haydon's diaries had long been known, but access to them until the happy appearance of Professor Willard Bissell Pope has been hitherto fugitive or haphazard. Haydon's own Autobiography drew from the journals; so did tom Taylor's three volume Life of Benjamin Robert Haydon (1853), and so have one or two other studies. Pope has set himself the task of transcribing and publishing an accurate text of the 26 folios of the diaries together with smaller notebooks, and the present volume is the first fruits of his labors. Condition: Heal bumped. Jacket rubbing to edges and spine ends else very good in like jacket.
