First issue reading of D7 (Bacon's Natural History and Milton's Paradise Lost ). Complete in two volumes, no pagination. Title pages in red and black, text with the exception of the Preface is in double columns. Bound in contemporary calf, very early and expertly done rebacking to both volumes, some wear and darkening to edges, internally with only a few leaves displaying some browning and the following minor flaws. Vol. I. Tiny chip to lower corner of K7. Volume II. Repair to bottom edge of front blank, small lower marginal closed tear to F16. Upper corner creased to T21- T2 and U21, very tiny closed edge tear to upper margin P29. Previous owner's armorial bookplate. This was Johnson's most monumental work and the "most amazing, enduring and endearing one-man feat in the field of lexicography". Printing and the Mind of Man #201. A handsome set.
