London: Macmillan and Co, 1879. 1st Edition . Very Good. 6.25 x 8.75 inches (16 x 22 cm). Complete four volume first edition set. A later separate index volume was published in 1890 but not present here. Half calf leather bindings with marbled boards. Spines have five raised bands, morocco title and volume labels, gilt and blind panelled compartments. Marbled page edges, marbled endpapers. Good solid binding with no cracking to joints. Light rubbing to leather and rubbing to boards. Light cup ring to front board of Vol III. Heavy foxing to leading and trailing blanks in all volumes, plus a few spots to Vol. I title page, text is in very clean condition throughout. Previous owner's name pencilled to title pages. (John Aitken, 15 Lincoln's Inn Field). An important reference work that is still being published today. A lovely, sturdy example of the first edition. Scarce. Overall condition is Very Good.
