Acceptable 1stEd UK, no DJ, about a 'possum as cute as Mr Tashlin's "Bear That Wasn't" Illustrated by Frank w/ b&w drawings, tite signatures bound in soiled loose red illus paperboards exposed at spine, front illus has small doodling & 9 checks (identical R illus is clean) , corners all worn & showing, hinges shaken & both showing but 90% intact, 1 small doodle on pastedown & ffep, pvt inscription opp the 1/2tp, textblock intact but well-tanned pages have either minor chips or closed tears in half the cases, and need to be handled with care; not o/w marked-in or discard. Superlative example of Mr Tashlin's flare for both design & humour, which we all can admire today; full bleed of drawings to paper's edge has not been reduced by the edgewear mentioned. Mails from NYC usually within 12 hours. ; Drawings; 7.4 x 10 in.; 60 pages; The fable's whole conceit is encapsulated in the odd fact that city people come upon a perfectly happy country animal smiling that they feel it their duty to "rescue" due to his "frown." You observe the absurdity of these city people dragging their 'possum into a movie theater, then a night club -- making him finally relent & turn his "Smile" into a actual frown over their pathetic lives. What irony, hey? Despite a happy ending, readers are left sadder but wiser after seing our own human foibles so artfully revealed. .

London: John Murray, 1951. First Thus . Hardcover. Good/No Jacket. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. The head and tail of the spine are chipped, as well suffering from insect damage; the hungry insects have also chewed along the spine and in two patches on the front board. The edges are also chipped. Both end papers are discoloured, presumably from the now missing jacket. Internally the book is immaculate. Illustrated by the author. Stated first British edition. Tashkent was a brilliant filmmaker and cartoonist, working with stars such as Jerry Lewis and Doris Day.
