Berlin,: Verlog von G. Reimer, 1842.. First Edition. With 10 full page lithographed plates, including 3 hand-finished chromolithographs. Folio, bound in later morocco backed marbled boards, the spine with lettering label gilt. A fine copy indeed with a neat release stamp on the verso of the title, and some very light spotting. FIRST EDITION OF THIS SCARCE WORK ON RAVENNA AND SOME OF ITS MOST IMPORTANT ARCHITECTURAL TREASURES. It is a study of Christian buildings from the 5th to 9th century. The author was a German architect, art historian and the first Prussian state curator . He was the heir to the Radensleben estate near Neuruppin and canon of the Brandenburg Cathedral Monastery. In 1838/1839 he stayed in Italy and studied the ancient sites. He subsequently gave lectures on the history of architecture in the Altes Museum. He was also an early advocate for historic conservation, arguing for restraint in renovation or reconstruction and a visible distinction between old and new
