About This Item

Harrisburg, Pa: Gedruckt und zu haben bey G. S. Peters, 1830. 140 x 90 mm. (5.5 x 3.5 inches). 18 leaves, printed on one side only. Eight full-color illustrations. Original orange paper printed wrappers. Light edge wear with a slight crease down the front. The words "Sept 1940" and "Mrs. Balsbaugh" written in ink on margins of front cover. Pennsylvania Dutch printer Gustav Sigismund Peters (1793-1847) is considered the first color printer in America, bringing his technique from Germany to Pennsylvania in the 1820's. In addition to his color printed children's books which were very popular, he printed thousands of fraktur or "Birth Certificates", in both German and English, for German-American communities north of Philadelphia. Like his fraktur, Peters' children's books are highly sought after as significant examples of Pennsylvania printing in the mid-19th century. Peters illustrated this volume by running the pages through the press multiple times -- first in black and then color printing individually red, yellow, blue and green. "The History of the House that Jack Built," Radiant With Color, A project of the American Antiquarian Society - online. Not cited in Hamilton.
