"By establishing a good organisation and espousing sound policy viewpoints the party ensured that the province's Nationalist voters' dream of a republic was realised in 1960. The Orange Free State voters turned out in large numbers at the polls in favour of a republic and thus ensured that the province had the highest voting percentage in the referendum.. From 1961 the National Party had a monopoly on politics in the Orange Free State, since it captured all seats in the general elections of 1961, 1966, 1970 and 1974. ... Despite setbacks, the National Party in the Orange Free State managed to steer the party boat successfully on the political sea. Its success was made possible by leaders, workers and supporters who firmly believed that the National Party would create a political home for them and their descendants." .
