Leipzig: Friedrich, 1885. First edition. [22],367,[1]pp. New cloth with gold stamped leather label on spine Forbes: Hawaiian national Bibliography 3671: " The author departed San Francisco May 13, 1878, on the "City of Sydney," and arrived in Honolulu May 21st. His descriptions of Honolulu include Iolani and Punahou schools. His comments on nearby scenic spots are typical for the period. On July 2nd, Anrep-Elmpt took the schooner Marianne to Kauai, which he toured thoroughly, paying particular attention to sugar plantations, many of which were operated by German nationals. Back in Honolulu the author took the interisland steamer Likelike to Maui (July 23rd), toured Wailuku and Waihee, and examined several sugar plantations in the vicinity of Makawao and Haiku. From Maui he continued to Hawaii and made a complete tour of the island, and his account again includes comments on sugar plantations, as well as on the more often described Hilo and the volcano of Kilauea. After his round of the neighbor islands, he made a similar investigation of the rural parts of Oahu. Part Two of the text (beginning on p.161) contains a historical account of the Islands, from their supposed discovery by Gaetano in the sixteenth century to 1883.
