About This Item

Melbourne: F.W. Cheshire, 1959. Limited Edition. Limited edition of 350 numbered copies, printed at the Hawthorn Press and beautifully illustrated with Lionel Lindsay's woodcut engravings (hand-printed on Japanese paper by the artist). THE JOURNEY The brave Day sleeps, far down the lists His pale pavilions lie In the sad autumnal coloured mists That mount the stricken sky. And the frail maiden stealing by The place where he is set, Glitters in jewelled armoury Blue casque and carcanet She reins her horses grey and black, She dons her cloak of stars, Her virgin face gleams pale aback Behind her helmet bars. Down the steep hours she must ride Ever a hopeless quest, To lay her love in all its pride Upon the broad Day's breast. In vain! The dawn wind stirs the sedge, The stars faint out and die, And on the far sea's darkling edge The bale-fires burn the sky.... The Night, ariding to the dawn Her destrier, in dismay Has reached the marches of the morn, The Citadel of Day. 1897. Octavo, bound in the original olive brown cloth, a very good copy.
