First edition, presentation copy, of the twelfth of fifteen annual speeches delivered to students of the Royal Academy by Sir Joshua Reynolds, artist, author, friend of Dr. Samuel Johnson-"Nobody admired Johnson more or understood him better, and to no one was he a truer friend. He was one of the few who could get the better of Johnson in conversation" (DNB)-and the motive force and first president of the Royal Academy. As with all of the Rothschild copies of the various Discourses, this copy inscribed on the half-title, "From the author" Hilles 20; Cf. Rothschild 1736-1739

Hardcover. 4to. 27cm, First Edition, 26p., rebound in quarter brown morocco, raised bands, marbled boards, mansucript paper label, half title slightly dust soiled else fine condition. (cgc) ~ One of fifteen lectures delivered between 1769 and 1790 by the founder and first president of the Royal Academy, Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792). President from 1768 to 1792, his discourses are noted for their sensitivity and perception. This Discourse is particularly a tribute to founding Royal Academy member, Thomas Gainsborough who had died in August, 1788. A scarce copy in attractive modern bindings.
