London: Printed for Benjamin White, at Horace's Head, In Fleet-Street, 1779. Revised thus edition. [c.1558 Padua 4to, 1-3]. English translation of the 1620 Venice edition with Barbaro Letter as 4. Rebound in [buttery smooth] 'old' brown calf, five raised bands, double ruled gilt at both caps, burgundy spine title "Cornaro's Discourses" with new gilt date "1779" at heel, marbled end papers. 16mo (16/17cm, paper/binding). pp. xii, 188. Very Good+. Title page quill signature "John Foster LU?, Boston, Mass. 1?9/69." Archival tape repairs to p. iv-v. Several interesting corrections on the age of Cornaro: (pen under lining p.viii and xi regarding age; the erasable pencil notes p.135-K4 and p.165-M3 look like they are trying to make sense of whether he was 95 or 91 when he wrote the book. He actually penned each of the four at ages 83, 86, 91 and 95 respectively. The Preface is almost identical to the article in Saturday Night, Vol.1 No. 13. Also in the preface is Addison's review in The Spectator, Vol. iii, No. 195. Titles of the 4 papers: 1. A Treatise on a Sober Life, 2. A Compendium on a Sober Life, 3. An EARNEST EXHORTATION, Wherein The author uses the strongest arguments to pursuade all men to embrace a regular and sober life, in order to attain old age, in which they may enjoy all the favours and blessings, that God, in his goodness, vouchsafes to bestow upon mortals, 4. Letter from Senior Lewis Cornaro to The Right Reverend Barbaro, Patriarch Elect of Aquileia. A period how-to book on achieving a very old age, which indeed the author did by moderation in diet and drink etc. (some say to 98, some say over 100 years). Of merit for 15-16th century Europe in lieu of period life expectancy statistics..

First edition. Duckworth and Co. London. 1918. Octavo. xviii, 372pp. 7 plates, 20 text illus. Original green cloth, gilt lettering to spine. Spine relaid. Endpapers renewed. Corners rubbed and slightly bumped. John George Adami (1862 - 1926) FRS, FRSE, CBE, LL.D., "qualified in medicine at Manchester and in 1892 was appointed professor of pathology at McGill University. At the invitation of the Royal College of Physicians (in London) he delivered the Croonian Lectures in 1917. He chose the title 'Adaptation and disease; the contribution of medical research to the study of evolution'. Adami believed that medical work had brought to light important facts about heredity that had not been communicated adequately to biological scientists. He used the lectures to describe this work, placing particular emphasis on his contention that acquired characters are inherited." M. Buttolph Journal of Medical Biography 2010.

A Note From Fred Rogers: A child's first visit with a pediatrician usually comes soon after birth. It may be months or even years later, though, that a child first shows fear about going to see a doctor. The worry of an injection or some other unfamiliar medical procedure can trigger that fear. It can also appear because another family member may be feeling medical anxieties. And, of course, new body awareness and needs for privacy develop naturally in children's early years, so all these feelings can make it very hard for them to let doctors investigate the workings of…
