Cover design, coat-of-arms on title page, forty-seven initials, and special printer's device, all in red, yellow, and black, designed and cut by Mallette Dean. Printed on hand-made paper from France, in Franciscan type set by Robert and Jane Grabhorn. Yellow decorated boards with white cloth spine; yellow paper title label printed in black and red. A Near Fine copy (slight splay). One of the Fifty Books of the Year. Originally printed in 1557. "One of our chief sources of information for the De Soto expedition was written by the Gentleman of Elvas, a soldier in the army... it is so detailed and so carefully done that it has come to be regarded as one of the most authentic narratives of De Soto's great exploit." - Introduction. (Book Club of California 65; Grabhorn Press 432).
