Description:
North Bay, Canada:: Transformer Press,, 2002.. Edition of 10. 10 x 7.5" with eight spreads. Accordion book with handmade paper pages and hard covers. The text is rubber-stamped and the images colour-copied. There are five very simple pop-ups. Tall tales and (possibly) true stories told to Lise Melhorn-Boe as a child are combined to create a fairy-tale version of her father's immigration to Canada, presented as a quest for food. The pages get more colourful and dimensional as the story progresses. Lise Melhorn Boe: "My father grew up during World War I in Germany, the third youngest of nine. So he remembered not having enough to eat. He was a good storyteller, so I've just put together a number of his tales. The photos are all really of him and his family. It was very hand that my grandfather actually was a poor shoemaker with many children, considering that I was trying to make it like a fairy tale. When I was away from home at university My father would always ask…

Philadelphia: Harrison Hall, 1818. Octavo, 338 pages. Folding frontispiece illustration of "Anderson's Patent Condensing Tub" plus eight other plates of stills, ciphers and condensers. Second edition, enlarged and approved. An early American distilling manual, originally published in 1813 by John Bioren. This work predates the printed appearance of what we recognize as bourbon whiskey by about one decade, the first reference to "bourbon whiskey" is 1821, and the first printed recipe 1823. But the book contains a serious examination of the charring of white oak barrels with burning straw, which is one of the main factors that makes bourbon what it is. This new edition is substantially more detailed, with seven more illustrations than the original. Some light foxing throughout, corners a bit bumped, otherwise very good, in full tree calf, with spine rebacked and original spine and gilt-stamped label laid down.

Caroline Langill, Home/bodies: Thoughts on Disclosure in the Recent Work of Lise Melhorn-Boe (Written in 1999 for the exhibition entitled Ghost Costumes at the White Water Gallery): "With this recent body of work, using the legacies left to her by her parents, Melhorn-Boe reveals the hidden lives of parents and children. So much of what happens in a family, as it struggles to maintain some semblance of normality, is invisible to the world. Pauline Melhorn produced a number of journals which expose a life fraught with tensions about missed opportunities, at a time when the notion of the nuclear family had reached its peak.…

Vienna; Bratislava, 1891. Contemporary scrapbook (25 x 18.5 cm.), 32 leaves containing thirty-one menus, mounted rectos only. This collection of menus is mostly sourced from Vienna, in large part from the Metropole Hotel and Frohner's Hotel Imperial, but there are also four from the Palugyay Palace in Bratislava. Although the menus come from only a few hotel restaurants, there is variety of design style, with some of the menus printed, and others handwritten on a pre-printed card. A few menus contain original photographic portraits, and others exhibit a striking Orientalism. One of the menus serves as a place card, and has the name "Carl Von Oberleithner" inked on the verso. Von Oberleithner was a successful businessman in the Hemp and Flax industry, and perhaps this was his collection. The menus are ordered chronologically, covering a ten-year period starting in 1881. A bit of fading and soiling to some of the menus, but overall in very good condition. The gilt-titled and decorated binder has some…

Paris: Sautelet et Cie, 1826. Two volumes, octavo, xiv, 390 & 449 pages. FIRST EDITION of the most famous treatise on gastronomy. The Physiology of Taste was published in an edition of 500 copies, appearing only two months after the author's death. A comprehensive philosophy of the palate, the table, and far beyond, the book is presented in a series of thirty meditations on subjects including the senses, taste, appetite, gastronomy, restaurateurs, cooking, fasting, obesity, death, sleep, rest and dreams. Brillat-Savarin was an attorney and magistrate who fled France during the Terror, living in Switzerland and New York until his return after the fall of Robespierre in 1796. The present work secured his eternal fame among gastronomes. M.F.K. Fisher - whose translation of Brillat-Savarin's work still stands as the best - commends this book for its straightforward and unornamented prose in an era of florid writing, but the intellectual range and invention of the work is anything but simple. At the very…

A much later edition this influential and massively successful cookbook, originally published in 1901. The emphasis is American, with a smattering of hearty Jewish Eastern European fare. In earlier editions, the Jewish/Eastern European influence was more prevalent. This copy is extraordinary, in unused condition bright and fresh, with the original white, washable boards shiny and clean, the original publisher's green dust jacket, with white bland and red printed text and decoration is equally exceptional. Fine, and rare thus. [Axford, p. 363; DuSablon, America's Collectible Cookbooks, pages 65-67].

Charlottesville: Bibliographical Society of America, 1980. hardcover, dust jacket. 6 x 9.25 inches. hardcover, dust jacket. 568 pages. To commemorate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Bibliographical Society of America, this retrospective collection of articles seeks to represent, in the broadest possible way, the diverse contributions of the members of the Society to its Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America. The pieces demonstrate to the highest degree of excellence - articles of critical importance that have moved forward the art of bibliography. This volume contains 39 articles that strongly suggest that the practice of bibliography in America during the past three-quarters of a century cannot be easily categorized. Instead, the articles range over the entire spectrum of the world of books. An interesting characteristic of the selection is the preponderance of articles concerned with the relationship between books and people - especially with collectors rather than with those…
