Vinegia (Venice/Venezia): Gabriele Giolito de' Ferrari, 1555. 1st Edition . Very Good. 3 x 5 inches (7.5 x 12.5 cm). Full vellum binding, spine with four raised bands and red morocco title label. Binding slightly strained in a couple of places but securely bound. Outside and upper margins tightly cropped and a few pages have slight loss to the first or last character of the printed marginal notations. Old paper repairs to leaves *xi, *xii, **, **ii, **iii & **iv. Fully collated and complete, with page number misprints at 25 (as 52), 239 (as 235), 240 (as 204), 245 (as 145), 271 (as 171) and 499 (as 496). Numerous woodcut initials and head & tail-pieces, plus 12 woodcut illustrations. Giolito's famous phoenix printer's device to title page and also to verso of colophon. Title page dated 1555, colophon dated 1554 (as expected). A small number of line markings in contemporary ink. Light water staining at various points within the book, slightly more pronounced over the last 70 pages. Front pastedown endpaper has a previous owner's bookplate (H.F. Davies, Elmley Castle), plus some notes and a price in old ink. Italian text. The landmark first Dolce edition. All editions of Dante published up to this point were simply titled 'Comedia', this was the very first edition to bear the now familiar title of 'Divina Comedia' or Divine Comedy.
