Mountpleasant , Ohio. Very Good-. 1825. Second Edition. Leather. v, [3], 320 pages; Contents complete and seure in original full calf bindingwith title label at spine with gilt lettering; wear at spine ends; heavy foxing. The Author: Elisha Bates, a well known Quaker in Ohio during the 1820s and 1830s, was publisher of The Philanthropist, (1818 to 1822). The Philanthropist was the first anti-slavery newspaper in the United States. Bates also started The Moral Advocate in 1821 and led the Mount Pleasant Meeting of the Society of Friends. When the Church split over doctrinal issues, Bates was a staunch opponent of Elias Hicks who favored Quaker liberalism. Bates was disowned by the Church and converted to Methodism, but later returned to Quakerism. Provenance: There are two original owners' names on the ffep -- a signature: J. S. Robson and later the stamp of Walter Robson. John Stephenson Robson was born in 1802 in Darlington, County Durham and died in 1888 in Saffron Walden, Essex at age 86. John married Rachel Green, and they had six children. The second owner was John's son Walter Robson, born in 1842 in Saffron Walden. Walter Robson married Christina Cox (born in 1847 in Summer Hill, Wollongong, New South Wales, Australia), in a civil ceremony at the Registry Office in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia in 1869. Being husband and wife in the eyes of the law they then adjourned to the "Friends Meeting House" in Devonshire Street where they stood up before the gathering declaring their vows. After the marriage, Walter and Christina Robson returned to England and the family resided at "Illawarra Cottage" Debden Road, Saffron Walden, Essex. That is the address of his ownership stamp on the ffep. .
