Description:
This British composer and pianist accompanied many famed musicians of the day -- singers Enrico Caruso, Titta Ruffo, Richard Tauber, John McCormack, Beniamino Gigli and violinists Fritz Kreisler and Mischa Elman -- and as a composer his main claim to fame is the sacred song "Ave Maria." AMuQS, 1p, 5" X 3" (irregular top edge), n.p., 20 November 1958. Very good. On pale blue stock, Kahn writes out three music measures of notes and words, identifying it as "Ave Maria" at top and at bottom writes, "To Mr. C.D. Paramey, with all good / wishes from / Percy B. Kahn / Nov:20th 58." He also initials it in upper right corner. A lovely older age example of the composer's best-known piece.

[ Np], 1977. 9 leaves. Photocopied file copy (but signatures original), stapled at corner, and punched at top for filing. Very good. A "Writer's Flat-Deal Employment Agreement," between Hjortsberg and Paramount Pictures, for Hjortsberg to undertake a screenplay adaptation, with revisions, of Maclean's A RIVER RUNS THROUGH IT. Signed by Hjortsberg at the end, and initialed by a Senior VP of Paramount ("R.E.Z."), and with two emendations in the body of the agreement initialed by both parties. It would be another fifteen years before MacLean's novella would see successful translation to the screen.

U.S. Grant's confidante and right-hand man John Rawlins (1831-69) was a fellow Galena, Illinois resident and served as his chief of staff throughout the Civil War and rose to the rank of brevet major general; Grant appointed him Secretary of War, but he served only six months before dying at age 38. His younger brother Lemmon (1834-95) was one of his many siblings. One of these dozen documents notes John Rawlins and three of them note Lemmon Rawlins -- as follows:. 1) DS in unknown hand (NOT Rawlins'), 8" X 12", 4pp lined lettersheet, Guilford, IL, 1857. Opening statement records, "A list of the Lands in Road District No 4 in the Town of Guilford at Which a Road tax is assessed for the year AD 1858 by the Commissioners of Highways...."
