London: Bradbury and Evans, 1848. Marbled boards. Brown leather spine labels with gilt borders. New brown endpaper. Bound without half-title. Forty illustrations by H.K. Browne (Phiz) including frontispiece and vignette title-page. Eight-line errata page bound behind the list of plates. Plates are generally clean, some peripheral foxing, vignette title-page slightly more than others. Contains most first issue points as noted in Smith 8; including Captain Cuttle's hook on his left hand in vignette title-page and plate facing p.238. This copy was bound from the original parts with stab holes easily identified. This Dickens title also contains the first example of a so-called dark plate and is found on p.547. This is also the first time that Browne created some horizontal illustrations for a Dickens work (five appear in Dombey and Son). Originally appeared in twenty numbers, bound in nineteen monthly parts, from October 1846-April 1848. The book form was first published on April 12, 1848. 624pp.. First English Edition. Recent 1/2 Brown Morocco. Essentially No Wear./No Jacket.. Illus. by H.K. Browne. Octavo.

Synopsis

Charles Dickens’s story of a powerful man whose callous neglect of his family triggers his professional and personal downfall showcases the author’s gift for vivid characterization and unfailingly realistic description. It follows the narrative of a shipping firm owner, who abandoned his family in favor of fortune after rejecting his daughter’s love in preference of a son. He later reconciles with her and begs forgiveness before his death.  Dombey and Son is a novel by the Victorian author Charles Dickens. It was first published in monthly parts between October 1846 and April 1848 with the full title Dealings with the Firm of Dombey and Son: Wholesale, Retail, and for Exportation . Dickens started writing the book in Lausanne, Switzerland, but traveled extensively during the course of its writing, returning to England to begin another work before completing Dombey and Son.
