About This Item

New York: W. J. Watt & Company / Grosset & Dunlap, 1920. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket. George W. Gage (Frontispiece). 12mo. 289 pages. Hardcover bound in yellow cloth with titles in black. Lacks dust jacket. The binding shows some rubbing and some soiling from handling. The binding is a little cocked, and there is a crease and a soiled spot on the spine. Inner hinges secure. Early owner's 1922 on the front flyleaf. There are some heavy brown stains in the bottom margins of pages 55-60, heaviest on pages 57-58, that remains in the margin and does not affect the text. Has a black and white frontis but is otherwise not an illustrated work. A curious publication. The title page gives the publisher as "W. J. Watt & Company" of New York, but the foot of the spine notes "Grosset & Dunlap." A work of fiction of an American in China. Quite scarce. No other copies online. No auction records.
