About This Item

Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin, 1894. First Edition, 7th Impression . Hard Cover/Stitched. Very Good/No Jacket. COLLECTIBLE. LAID-IN: Handwritten letter from Anges Repplier (1858-1950) on personal stationary dated June 21st, 1938 attached to rear. First Edition, 7th Impression of 1899. Text/Near New, showing faint margin discoloration. Red linen boards/VG w/trace soiling and discolored backstrap. DJ/None. PO label to front cover verso. Anthology of 20 essays, gracefully witty and scholarly. The title is taken from the first essay in which Repplier speaks of those "dozy hours" when one wakes at night begin a perfect time to revisit and "only half remember" favorite books, a pleasure she notes was shared by Thackeray and Charles Lamb. The 2nd essay is titled "A Kitten", relevant to the laid-in note: "I care nothing for book plates, but a great deal for cats, and a very great deal for words. They (the words, not the cats) are the inheritors of ancient loyalties and ancient prejudices, and from them much is to be learned. You remember that Gautier said the disctionary was the most interesting book in the world.
