About This Item
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1949. Hardcover. 8vo. Blue cloth with gilt spine lettering, pictorial price-clipped dust jacket. vii, 496pp. Very good/very good. Faint jacket edgewear only. A wonderfully tight and attractive first edition of the second novel by this popular, prolific potboiler novelist -- a drama about early Hollywood filmmaking. Unusual autograph twist: Tipped to the front flyleaf are three identical 5" X 2 3/4" heavy stock cards signed by three cast members from the 1980 made-for-television film version -- top to bottom: KAYE BALLARD (born 1925) in black fineline, dated by her 5 May 1982; RED BUTTONS (1919-2006) in blue ballpoint, dated by him 7 October 1970); and ROBERT GOULET (1933-2007) in black fineline, dated by him 13 August 1989. (All are fine and bold, and the original transmittal envelopes for all three are laid in.) The film also starred Mark Harmon, Ray Milland, Carol Jones, Robert Culp, Vincent Gardenia, Morgan Fairchild, Howard Duff, Fernando Llamas, Jan Murray, David Groh and others.
