Dreams In Your Heart by Jaques, Edna - 1937

Toronto: Thomas Allen, 1937 Edna Jaques Has Suffered A Number Of Indignities, Including The Man Who Used To Tour Around In Drag In Imitation Of Some Sentimental Poetess, Some Say Inspired By Edna. It Has Also Been Noted That In The 1930'S The "Serious" Poets In Eastern Canada Were Loath To Consider Contributions From This Homey Western Poet. And Yet, These Poems Do Capture A Domestic Flavor Surely Merits A Little Notice. Her Poem, Knitting, For Example, Describes A Woman Knitting Baby Bootees While Listening To The Radio, The " Highways Of The Air" Knitting Us Together Does Capture Something I've Been Attempting To Put Together To Explain The Heritage Of Public Radio And What It Means To Us As A People. I Think Regardless Of The Homeliness Of Her Subjects, Thousands Of Prairie People Knew Exactly What She Was Talking About, And That Has Value That We Wouldn't Want To Loose. This Volume In Some Ways Demonstrates Just What I Mean. The Inscription, This From A Woman Who Writes Poems About Her Neighbour's Clothesline, States, "Yours Very Sincerely, Edna Jaques For Mrs. Gordon My Good Neighbor [Underlined Twice]." And Then, The Next Owner, Or Perhaps The One After Her, Has Torn Out A Corner Of The Ffep, Written Her Own Name In Green [Underlined] And Has Obliterated Edna's Name With Blue Ink! The Boards Are Faded And There Is A Hole In The Cloth On The Back Panel. The Dust Jacket Is Long Gone. There Have Been Spills And A Few Of The Browning Pages Have Been Dogeared. Top And Tail Are Becoming Threadbare, And Still This Cheerful Little Volume Hangs In There. Apparent First, Copyright 1937 And Published By Thomas Allen That Same Year.
