Heavy tanning to pages with heavier foxing and tanning to pastedowns and endpapers. Slight dog-eared pages throughout and cracks to guttering with exposed netting. Both hinges are cracked with exposed netting. Boards have visible edge wear and rubbing. Moderate bumping to corners and major crushing to spine ends. Splitting to joints with front board is detached but present.

The whole printed in large type, double column and with many excellent chromolitho plates. Bound in blind embossed leather with gilt titles and decoration to spine and both boards. Bevelled edges and AEG and 5 raised bands to spine.

Bound in quarter dark brown leather with textured brown publisher's cloth, seams boarded in gilt tooling. Hubbed leather spine is heavily ornamented in gilt tooling, gilt lettering, and bears five raised bands. All edges gilt. Endpapers are a chocolate brown. Illustrated throughout with twenty, beautifully detailed chromolithographs in full color. Frontispiece is also in full color entitled "I Dreamed a Dream". Most text is large print. Ornamented initials. John Bunyan's "The Pilgrim's Progress" is one of the most important theological works ever written. Thought to be first printed in 1678, Bunyan began writing this story while in prison. It is known that while Bunyan was in prison, his only companions were the Bible and Foxe's "Book of Martyrs" – thus, the two literary giants in his jail cell certainly influenced the writing of "Pilgrim's Progress." A Quaker by the name of Granger visited Bunyan in prison and says of him:
"Bunyan, who had been mentioned among the least and lowest of our writers, and even ridiculed as a driveller by those who had never read him, deserves a much higher rank than is commonly imagined. His 'Pilgrim's Progress' gives us a clear and distinct idea of Calvinistic divinity."
