Droll Stories: Thirty Tales By Honoré de Balzac

by BALZAC, Honoré de (Boris Artzybasheff, Ralph Barton, Sangorski and Sutcliffe)

Condition: Fine

[New York]: The Heritage Club, 1939. Hardcover. Fine. Translated from the French by Jacques Le Clercq. With in-text illustrations by Boris Artzybasheff and color plates designed by Ralph Barton. Bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe in green morocco over boards, with pictorial designs stamped in color on both boards and the spine, inside gilt tooling, all edges gilt. Bookplate of Saul Shapiro on the first front fly leaf. Very slight sunning to the spine, a fine copy in a maroon goatskin book cover with interior silk pastdowns and yapp edges and the title lettered in gold on the spine; housed in a slipcase in quarter maroon goatskin and cloth. There is a light stain to the silk pastedowns on the inside of the goatskin book cover (not affecting the book), thus near fine overall. A scarce copy with "extra illustrations" by Ralph Barton, in an exceptional Sangorski and Sutcliffe binding.
