About This Item

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1970. Large octavo, blue hardcover, 480 pp., eight double-sided plates. A fine copy in dust jacket. Reprint.

This book begins with ferocious combats of 1917 and 1918, traces the rise of men like Goering and Dowding, Udet and Sholto Douglas, whose lives took them from the cockpits of their biplanes to the command of the opposing forces in 1940, follows the birth of new traditions and new techniques in the rival services and the birth of a new generation of pilots.

On Mar 24 2011, Patrick1952 said:
Peter Townsend provides excellent background describing the development of fighter and bomber technology and warfare theory during and after WW1 of the British RAF and the German Luftwaffe, leading up to the Battle of Britain. A very personal and compassionate rendering of the tragic conflict between Germany and England.
