New York: W.W. Norton & Company 1960, 1st American edition. (Hardcover) 308pp. Very good plus in very good dust jacket. Red cloth with gilt lettering to the spine and gilt cover device. Illustrations, photographs, sources, index. The covers and spine are lightly edgeworn, the dust jacket is creased and rubbed with a few chips and soil marks, and there is some underlining in the text. "Charles Kingsley was born, appropriately enough, in the same year as Queen Victoria -- appropriately, for if there ever lived such a mythical figure as a typical Victorian, Kingsley might well be that man".
