Petrograd: Knigoizdatel'stvo "Ogni", 1917. Octavo (16 × 12 cm). Original printed wrappers; 15, [1] pp. A fine copy. First brochure-form publication of an important essay by the Russian revolutionary and Marxist thinker Georgi Plekhanov (1856-1918), published as part of a series titled "The citizen's library" (Biblioteka grazhdanina). Plekhanov uses writings by Marx to distinguish between an "ascending" and a "descending" line of revolutionary activism; the former implies a gradual growth of radicalization, from moderate factions, to Octobrists, to socialist revolutionaries. The article was published in October 1915 in the Menshevik and SR journal 'Prizyv' (Paris). It was immediately subjected to a scathing critique by Lenin, in a text entitled "On the Two Lines on the Revolution" ("O dvukh liniiakh revoliutsii"), also in 1915, in the paper 'Sotsial-demokrat'.
