About This Item

New York: East Village Other, Publisher, 1969. Tabloid. Good. Side folding tabloid newspaper. 20 pp. Black and white illustrations and comix throughout. East Village Other was an underground newspaper from New York (duh), known for its early embrace of the counterculture and counterculture aesthetics, often using absurdist pieces to provide social commentary. As an early proponent of the underground comix movement, EVO published work by R. Crumb, Trina Robbins and others, as well as publishing a paper devoted to comix. This issue with an almost full page, first person account of the Stonewall Inn riots. Written by Ronnie Di Brienza, a self-proclaimed musician and "freak," the piece recounts events leading up to the riots, and with some foresight, anticipates that a movement may have begun. Despite claiming to be a friend of the LBGTQ+ community, and asserting the he liked both men and women, Di Brienza uses a variety of slurs when referring to the gay community. The Stonewall Inn riots began on June 28th, as a result from continued police harassment. These events have been viewed as a turning point in the gay liberation movement. The site was made a national monument in 2016. GOOD condition. Horizontal fold crease present. Moderate toning. Paper a bit brittle, with a 2 inch split at the center spine, and a two inch tear at the center rear edge. Mailing label present.
