Description:
Pages numbered 1-32 (advertisements); xv, [1 blank], 632 pages; pages numbered 33-62 (advertisements). Cloth a little rubbed and slightly creased on the spine with a small dark mark to the lower spine. Bookseller's(?) pencil notation to the front free end-paper and top margin of page 1 of the advertisements. Internally clean and unmarked. Complete with plans and maps (6 folded) as listed in the "table méthodique". Very small tear to the hinge of the map of Buenos-Ayres. Text in French. Albert Martinez illegally, and seemingly with impunity, used the Baedeker name to sell his guide. More than that he closely mimicked the Baedeker look and feel as closely as he could. That aside, the guide is packed with useful information for the contemporary traveller and is an abundant resource of historical relevance – if you want to know the details of all the early 20th century registered league football clubs in "Buenos-Ayres et dans les environs" you'll find it here. With an initial 80-page introduction to… Read More

Original dark brown pebble cloth with Titles in gilt and blindstamped rules. Folding original map 'Map of Routes' soundly affixed at preface page. An attractive example of the Second edition which is the most desireable due to the larger size and the fact that Eastman saw fit to start adding maps, this changed it from a tourist vaca trinket or keepsake to an actual useable guide with mountains and trails shown. Eastman's Guides outsold all other similar WM guides by a huge margin, due (I believe from reading several myself over the past 50 years) mostly to it's low price but also to it's brevity and interesting text that was engaging without being to technical. Description:
London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. 39pp., A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours. Please call or email with your questions about this book. Not available for…
