About This Item

New York: Grossman Publishers/Trianon Press, 1971. Hardcover. Very Good/Good To Good Plus. Ben Shahn was 8 when his Orthodox Jewish family immigrated to the U.S. from Lithuania in 1906 to join his father who, exiled to Siberia for socialist views, escaped, and started a new life in New York. Shahn became well-known as an artist, working in a social realist style, when his 23 goache paintings, "The Passion of Sacco and Vanzetti," were exhibited in 1932. This book is a late work by Shahn, a facsimile reproduction of the original limited edition published by The Trianon Press in Paris in 1967. This is a first U.S. edition, first printing thus. Folio, about 9 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches, 54 pages (unpaginated), in green cloth-covered boards with gold lettering on spine, handwritten and illuminated by Shahn, with eight full-color drawings or watercolors, with the colophon from the original edition included at the back. The dustjacket's front panel shows the title lettered in gold with lettering on spine in black and a b & w photo of the artist supervising the printing on the back panel. Front cover for this copy shows two tiny (pen point) light-colored dots, o/w boards are without flaw. Front end page contains a bookplate which previous owner attempted to remove, leaving it partially damaged. O/w boards and text are complete, clean and unmarked. Not ex-library, not remaindered. The dustjacket shows a half-inch, closed tear in lower right corner of front panel, no other damage, not price-clipped. In spite of the damage noted above, this remains an impressive example of Shahn's late work. [Due to its size, this book may require additional postage for priority/express orders or orders from outside the U.S.]
