About This Item
Boston: Anne & David Bromer, 1983. Wilcox, Michael. (62)pp. First edition. From an edition of 400 copies signed by Gorey, this is one of 100 copies comprising the deluxe issue with the illustrations hand-colored by him. The text is an alphabet of short humorous couplets patterned after early moral primers for children, as in "Find tasks to do While in a Queue." Each couplet is accompanied by a full-page illustration. This is the first miniature book that Edward Gorey wrote, designed, and illustrated.
This copy has been specially bound by Michael Wilcox in full green morocco with multicolored leather onlays, gilt tooling, and leather doublures. Wilcox described his design as "the young abecedarian doing a bit of eclectic collecting," and indeed, the binding depicts a figure smelling a flower while gathering a bouquet of multi-hued alphabetical blooms. A.e.g. Gold stamped "Wilcox 1989" on the rear doublure. Housed in a custom box with a leather spine label. A fine copy in a unique designer binding. (Bromer, pp. 51-55). (1 by 1 1/4; 25x32mm).
