The lack of a book of general reference on gold mining shares, and particularly one which includes a reference to the interpretation of reports, has been felt for many years. Perhaps because of this the investing public has not been in the best position to make full use of the wealth of information published, not only by the mines and mining groups but also by the Transvaal Chamber of Mines. It is hoped that this small volume will help to meet this need in the future. The original intention was to confine the book to an interpretation of reports - the subject matter of Part II of the book - but it was felt that it would then be incomplete. An attempt has, therefore, been made to give a concise outline of the principal geological features and of mining methods which will meet the needs of the general investor.
