About This Item
Two page ALs from the Vicarage, Bedfont, Middlesex, June 15th, 1821, to his prospective publisher. He sends material relating to his new volume. His friend Lord Howden had sent the addressee six or eight names. He asks for the prospectus to be advertised in The New Times and Morning Chronicle. He wishes to keep the "high ground". He will be in town next week when he hopes his list of friends (=? subscribers) may make . a respectable appearance. He has many friends to whom he has not yet applied. He has received a number of letters that encourage him to proceed. Worn and very slightly soiled with two small tears at edges not affecting legibility. Jones was a clergyman turned economist in 1833 when he became a professor of political economy at King's College, London. He broke from Ricardo's system and refuted -accurately- an important conclusion of Malthus' re. population. Here we seem to have evidence of what might have been his first book on economics, apparently unpublished. Good. Manuscript.
