About This Item
London: Seeley, Jackson & Halliday. NEAR FINE book. 1st ed. RLS' 2nd book. FINE text 14"x10", 39pp.. 1879. 1st edition. Hardcover. NEAR FINE book. AEG. Upper cover with 6 black, blind stamped edge rules around gilt lettered author/title/artist info. . Illustrated with six Brunet-Debaines etchings from 5 Lockhart and 1 Bough drawing. In text woodcut vignettes by Chalmers or Thomas. PRISTINE interior with 3 important bookplates BUT: few very minor pastedown faults AND small "Cleveland Antiquarian Books" sticker inside upper cover. Text & etchings absolutely flawless. Bevelled covers of pebbled green cloth. Spine gilt lettered title/publisher info. Upper cover with gilt & black Edinburgh coat of arms at center. Very bright covers. Tips with 1/8" spots of wear in the outer cloth exposing the underlying boards. Spine ends lightly frayed. Interesting provinence. Bookplates of Herschel V Jones (1861-1928), W.T.H. Howe (1874-1939) and Edith Barbara Trantor. Jones was a newspaper editor & print & book collector. Howe a publisher & book collecter. Trantor was Howe's personal secretary and a book collecter in her own right. Jones' small bkplt gilt on green at top. Howe's at center, gilt on black, 2"x3". Interestingly, Trantor's bkplt is exactly the same size but carefuly laid right over Howe's such that only his name is exposed. Is there a story there? Book likely first owned by Jones, then Howe, last by Trantor. Her books were auctioned in 1962. .
