About This Item

Knopf, 1995. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Unmarked text. Unchipped dust jacket with slight chipping on edge. Front end page reads "Kitaj," with a post-it not that reads to Dear K. [note text here] Love, Frank. Deckle edge. More than 100 images and photographs. 678pp. Bibliographic Notes. Index. A profile of American artist Edward Hopper is based on diaries by his wife Jo, revealing Hopper's dour and repressed personality, the sources of his creations, and his tempestuous forty-three-year marriage. The artist R.B. Kitaj (1932-2007) was a self-professed bibliomaniac. In 1969 his love of books provided the inspiration for In Our Time: Covers for a Small Library After the Life for the Most Part at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art—a portfolio of 50 screenprints depicting the covers of select books from the artist’s library. Although this book cover was not included, Kitaj did do a screenprint of Lloyd Goodrich’s 1949 book on Edward Hopper in the Penguin Modern Painters series (edition size 150). Provenance: Peter Howard, Serendipity Books, Berkeley.
