Full leather: spine with raised bands, spine labels, gilt decorated panels. Marbled endpapers & decorated tail-pieces. Texts are tight, clean & intact. Vol. 1 has a pictorial frontispiece & several small numbered figural tables. Volume 2 has eight fold-out geometic plates. Armorial Coat of Arms of early owner. Rated G+ due to front hinges starting at spine head with covers fully attached. Interior is clean without foxing. Contents: The introduction gives the reader the necessary arithmetical skills to begin the study of algebra, teaching the reader to carry out the standard arithmetical operations, take roots of numbers, calculate with fractions and become skilled in problems of proportion. The chapters on algebra introduce the idea of an equation and how real life problems can be reduced to equations, how to solve quadratic equations and other topics such as magic squares are studied. By chapter 6 Saunderson is presenting problems in the style of Diophantus mixing geometric and algebraic ideas. Then he presents applications of algebra to geometry, in particular studying ratio and proportion from Book 5 of Euclid's Elements. He goes on to consider solid geometry giving results on prisms, cylinders, and spheres. In Book 9 Saunderson presents the binomial theorem and the theory of logarithms. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
