The several marks by which bearers of the same coat-of-arms are distinguished from each other. The different kinds of tinctures, lines, figures, charges, and ornaments used for coats-of-arms. The laws of heraldry; practical directions for marshalling coats-of-arms; and the order of precedence. The hatchments so clearly described, that the branch and title, the deceased was of, may be readily known. Illustrated with several cuts, and twenty-four copper-plates, containing above five hundred examples of escutcheons, arms, &c. and interspersed with the natural history and allegorical signification of the several species of birds, beasts, fishes, vegetables, &c. comprised in this treatise. To which is annexed, a dictionary of the technical terms made use of in heraldry. &c. By M. A. Porny, French Master at Eton." pp xxiv, 278, [82, A Dictionary of the Technical Terms] + 24 plates. Half-title present, no rear free endpaper. Page edges rough trimmed. Later binding of brown leather, raised bands, appllied over boards with no pastedowns, new paper spine label. Chip at head of spine neatly repaired with insert; corner crease to front free endpaper; front inner hinge neatly repairde with rice paper; else a VG clean, tight and unworn copy. ESTC T94010. First published 1765. Contains over 500 examples along with the allegorical meaning of some creatures used in heraldry. ; Octavo .

Contemporary full calf, raised-ribbed gilt ruled spine, boards with single gilt rolled gilt fillet border, red sprinkled edges (outer joints worn but boards firm; boards scratched and rubbed at edges). Pp. xx + 254 + dictionary, illus with 25 plates and woodcuts in text (previous owners' bookplates on front endpapers and neat inscription in contemporary hand on recto of frontispiece).
