About This Item

Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press, [2003]. xxiv, 211 pages. Original black cloth. 23.5 x 16 cm. Fine in very nearly fine dust jacket (spine panel a trifle sunned). FIRST EDITION. Theophilus Gould Steward (1843-1924) was an African Methodist Episcopal minister from New Jersey. After the Civil War, he organized and preached to congregations in South Carolina and Georgia, was active in the Republican Party, and fought for civil rights. In 1873, he went on a mission to Haiti and established an A.M.E. church in Port-au-Prince. He was later the chaplain of the 25th U.S. Colored Infantry and served during the Spanish-American War. Steward also helped found the American Negro Academy, served as a professor at Wilberforce University (1907-1924), and wrote multiple books including theological works, military histories, memoirs, and a novel.
