Wood engravings in the text: 22 plates (incl. photogravure frontis. portrait), title vignette, & 24 text illustrations. First American Edition. 8vo; 8.75 inches tall; xxiv, 490 pp. index.

Bindings are tight and square. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear.. The dramatic story of the rebellion of the Mahdist in 1885 and of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition, under H.M. Stanley, journeying to the rescue of General Gordon's lieutenant and friend, Emin Pasha (the German doctor Eduard Schnitzer), by heading up the Congo River.

The author was part of the expedition. Written with the revision and co-operation of Henry M. Stanley.
