Inscribed on title page "Rowland Eyre" and in another hand "Hassop Chapel"; back free endpaper has "Prayers for our Country" written on both sides, in a hand matching the Rowland Eyre signature. Hassop Chapel was built in 1806 and used until 1838. There have been a number of men named Rowland Eyre who were descendants of the more well-known Rowland Eyre who erected the new Hassop Hall in the 17th century, but determining which of them was the owner of this book is not possible. John Gother, to whom this volume of prayers is attributed, was a 17th-century English convert to Catholicism, and the Eyre family were staunch English Catholics who probably knew Gother, as he served as chaplain at nearby Warkworth for a time.… Read More
