London: Gollancz, 1984. Hard Cover. Dust Jacket. Signed by Author. # 8 of a SIGNED LIMITED EDITION of 100 COPIES. Publisher's black boards with gilt spine lettering and red end-papers and Japanese flag embossed on the front board. Red top edge. A fine copy (with the usual slightly toned page edges due to the poor quality of paper used) in the original publisher's glassene D/W in near fine condition in a fine slip-case. Photographs/scans available upon request.
Synopsis
Empire of the Sun is a 1984 novel by J. G. Ballard which was awarded the James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Like Ballard's earlier short story, "The Dead Time" (published in the anthology Myths of the Near Future), it is essentially fiction but draws extensively on Ballard's experiences in World War II. Ballard later wrote a sequel, entitled The Kindness of Women.
